Significance of Work Order Priority Field available at work order header level

Work Order Header has a priority field and I understand there are possible ways to automatically assign the work order priority as well (from user guides).
But I could not get any content to understand the impact/importance of the work order priority. Is it referred in production scheduling or during production (if so what does it help us automate) ???
