How do you determine what action caused an old position sync to occur on 2 termed employee records?

We had 2 employees, months after termination, show up on a retro payroll report. These employees have been termed months ago. From what I can tell, during the last pay period, a position sync (looks like a manager change), showed up on their assignment records effective dated the same as their hire date, but last update date 6/18/2026. I will attach a screenshot. I believe this somehow caused some portion of the termination to reprocess (absence accural using an older formula that didnt work correctly) that gave them an absence payout. I have looked at
