random error on reference variable

Hi, I have a smart view which populates < 90 reference variables, which per the guidance on this board is well under the upper limits of how many you can safely populate, but I get a weird error on a single variable, where I am using a subtly different text function to apply a number format to the value that is stored and the error tells me that this is an invalid reference. If I clear it and store the straight number value, it works. I have also tried deleting and recreating the variable but that does not clear the
