In communities like Customer Connect Community, Industries and Oracle University Community it is mandatory to update the auto-generated community name (for example, User_123) with an Oracle name compliant policy name.
If you have updated your name in your SSO profile but still see the old username, here’s why this happens and how to fix it.
Why Your Username Might Not Change
In Oracle Communities, your forum handle (display name) must meet Oracle’s policy requirements. Sometimes, even after updating your SSO profile, the community username stays the same due to these rules:
- Your chosen name is already in use
- Forum handles must be unique, another account with the same display name can cause conflicts. If another member already uses your updated name, the system will automatically assign a username like
User_123.
- Your forum handle is empty
- When your community account is first created, if the forum handle is blank, the system will try to set it to FirstName + LastName from your SSO profile as Name for the community.
- If that combination is not unique, the system will generate a
User_xxx name instead.
- You have multiple accounts with the same SSO name
- If you previously had another Oracle SSO account (for example, from a former organization) with the same display name, this can block the update.
How to Fix the Issue
- Update your SSO name
- Log in to your Oracle SSO profile and ensure your First Name and Last Name are correct.
- Log out and log back in
- After changing your SSO profile, log out of the community and log back in. This refreshes your profile name in the community.
- Choose a unique name
- If your preferred name is taken, try adding a middle initial, number, or variation until it’s unique.
- Check for duplicate accounts
- Make sure you don’t have another community account (from a previous employer or email) using your desired name/email.
Example Scenarios
- Before: You changed your SSO profile name to John Smith, but in the community you still see User_456.
- Why: Another member is already using John Smith.
- Fix: Change your forum handle in your SSO profile to John A. Smith or JohnSmith_Oracle.
Key Takeaways
- Your Display name must be unique and policy compliant.
User_xxx is a fallback name when your preferred name is unavailable or the system can’t generate a unique name from your SSO profile.- Logging out and back in after updating your SSO name is required.
If you still face issues after following these steps, contact Oracle Community Dev Support and provide your current username, SSO email address and community name which you have an account with.
