Document Control at line level

 We have a need to be able to place a "hold" on a PO line pending confirmation of cancellation from the vendor (contractual obligation reasons). 

There is no way to do this from the document control window. 

We would like to avoid custom code if at all possible.  Is there a way to create a document status like hold or frozen and be able to place that on a line instead of just cancelling the line?
