What are the ramifications of having a future PO period in 'closed' status?

One of our users accidentally opened the NOV-09 purchasing period.  We have been advised that it's okay to just set the period to 'closed' and re-open it at the end of OCT-09.  What sort of problems will this cause if the period is closed rather than future entry enabled as we approach NOV-09?  One of the users mentioned that she was told in the past that there may be problems with blanket POs but she's been unable to provide any further details.
