Standby switchover

We have a physical standby 9207 database which we would like to activate as the primary. At the same time we would like to convert the existing primary to a standby without copying the datafiles. We are not using dataguard - just legacy homegrown scripts.  Is this possible, supported, and does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to accomplish this?
