Need Criteria of Claim User Status

Need to know  the criteria/logic that defines how the values for Claim user status are populated. 

Values are CLOSED, Cancelled, Closed -Auto write off, Closed - match delete, closed- paid, Open. Specifically interested in the difference between CLOSED vs Cancelled.
