ASM and Raid

I have done some reading about ASM. I understand that you take a group of disks and you format them and they become one logical storage. Then oracle would strip the files into the group of disks.

What I did not understand is, do you have to abandon RAID to use ASM? RAID does striping also and it is hardware while ASM is logical.
