ORA-12154 error when trying to connect with a recently created user

 I am trying to set up an Oracle 11G database on a Redhat Linux 5 VMWare can. I'm having some trouble actually seting up the tables and such because I can't access the account I created. When I try and log in using SQL plus I get the following error.

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specifies

I've looked at the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora files and the listener is running. I can log to the sys account from the command line, but I get the same error if I attempt to log into the sys@database
