Data Guard management during extended outage of failover server

I implemented Data Guard to manage the production and physical standby databases for a customer. We have been up and running for 6months without any issues. We lost the standby server a few days ago which led to large alert logs and LGWR issues terminating the instances. I then disabling the dataguard configuration for the databases as in interim fix till our standby server is available. Question: What is the best practice for Data guard managed databases when the standby server is not available for an extended period of time?
