RMAN Retention policy -- backup files status

Hi,

We are using RMAN Image Copy Incremental Update (ICIU) to take backup of the database with a retention window of 5 days. With this setting the RMAN should keep the backup files for only 5 days. When we checked the backup folder there exist files older than 5 days. When we ran the CROSSCHECK today i.e 15th, for all the copies and backup sets, RMAN marked Jan 2nd backup copies as AVAILABLE. For the same reason our scheduled job is not deleting the old files. Can somebody please explain why RMAN is marking the files as AVAILABLE when technically they are
