Monitoring databases in a HA environment with virtual i.p's for each database and only physical i.ps

Hi People
We have a environment with 2 servers, each with there own physical i.p and hostname.
on each server, there resides a number of databases, each with their own virtual i.p and hostname.
Setting it up to failover in the event of a loss of server is fine, but how do you go about setting it up, if you dont failover the whole server but rather only a few database from one server to another.
