Automatic Memory Management and shared memory ORA-00845

Two node Oracle 11g cluster. Three Oracle 11.1.0.6 RAC databases.
RHEL 5.2 x86_64.

Got ORA-00845.

Can somebody explain how automatic memory management (setting memory_target) works when installing more than one database in relation to shared memory?
For a single instance database memory_target must be lower than the size of /dev/shm.
Have increased size of /dev/shm following 465048.1. It works for now. But would like to understand what I'm doing.
