What are the pros & cons between the Open item Interface & Item API?

Users are creating item using an API EGO_ITEM_PUB.Process_Items and & its respective revision using an API EGO_ITEM_PUB.Process_Item_Revision. So, comparing it with Open Item Interface which uses concurrent Manager & Interface Tables:
Which one is the best to use? Item API OR Open item Interface using interface tables.
What are the pros & cons between the Open item Interface & Item API?
