Hi,
We plan to go for single segment Item Number. We are looking at a standard for that. Right now we are looking  at UNSPSC as a standard. However UNSPSC, classifies items at a very high level. For e.g. 26101501 represents Hydraulic engines in UNSPSC. However, there could be thousands of Hydraulic engines differing based on parameters like Power, Frequency, RPM etc.
Please let us know if there are any better standards than UNSPSC available.
