randomly disconnected from oracle

Hi all,
I have a user that randomly gets disconnected from Oracle. He is using two major applications, both with an Oracle db at the backend. When leaving the applications idle for some time, using other applications like Word and such, he gets disconnected from Oracle, and I have to kill his session for him to reconnect. Any ideas how to solve this?

I have a vague memory of reading somewere on metalink, about a guy who had similar problems, and that in his case it was caused by old software in a firewall or a switch, but I can't find it again.
