Oracle Instant Client

Has anyone utilized (succesfully) the Oracle Instant Client (10G or 11G) that alleviates the need to a full (or runtime) client install for remote access to databases, from a Windows based PC/laptop?

If so, I would love to hear from you.

We have a slew of Excel workbooks that draw on data from our EBS database - and for all new desktops/PC's the install of a full (or runtime) client (along with the relevant TNSNAMES.ora file) is necessary to get these workbooks to function/refresh properly.
