Upgrade from 8i on windows 2000 to 10g on windows 2003

I need to upgrade an 817 database on windows 2000 to a 10g database on windows 2003 (different server). The 2003 server already has other 10g databases on it so I need to make sure I don't affect these in any way. I have exported (exp) from 8i with no problem. I tried to import into a newly created 10g database, but had loads of errors. I must have missed some steps. Can anyone let me have a step by stp guide to acheiving this please?
