Printing of customer statements - Formatting

Does anyone use the "print statements" feature (11i - 11.5.10).  If so, how is formatting handled.  Using the text format is really worthless; column headings aren't even there. 
Relatively new to this, and don't have experience with these statements.  Does this require a great deal of custom programming to have a presentable statement for a customer?
