alpha-numeric customer number

 Hi,

  I want to know if we can enter and alpha-numeric as a customer number. We tried to enter an alpha numeric in customer number field and it gave us an errors saying it has to be number. Since the tables can hold a varchar, I am assuming it should accept alpha-numerics. Is there a setup step or profile option related to this ?

 Are any of you using alpha-numeric customer numbers ?
