Java with Oracle EBS

Hi-
We are having an issue - the client has a legacy system that uses an older version of installed Java (version 1.3).

When we try to use EBS 12, it installs a much higher version of java - how can these both co-exist and work together?  Can you have two different versions of java installed and can you tell EBS (and other sites) which one to use?

Any advice?  Thanks in advance!
