Problems with server initiated backups from EMC Networker

Oracle server is running Redhat linux release 4.6 x86
We have the Networker Client installed and the Networker Module for Oracle.  sbttest works, normal filesystem "save" and "recover" works.

Starting rman backups by hand works fine.

Starting rman backups from NMO level works fine (as root run the /usr/sbin/nsrnmo.xxx with the relevant parameters)

but when the backup session is started from the Networker server (scheduled or run by hand with savegrp) we run into problems.  rman runs and initiates the backup, but the channels get stuck indefinitly wating for a network wait event (backup: sbtbackup), very high wait events (just spinning there).

Howdy, Stranger!
