Meaning of delete obsolete if backup onto tape.

Hi all,

I am backing up my database onto LTO tape using rman daily. After the backup, the script will call crosscheck and delete obsolete.

Now, i have a question, since my backups are onto tapes, what will crosschecking and delete obsolete actually do? Will rman really delete the obsolete backups from tape or it is merely deleting the backup sets records in the recovery catalog?

Please advise! Thanks!
