Questions about restoring DB with RMAN

edited May 12, 2009 7:00AM in Database Backup and Recovery (MOSC) 3 commentsAnswered
I ran into a couple of issues yesterday restoring a RMAN backup of our production DB to a test server.

Environment Information:

Production server: Noakci-db01,  SID: DB01

Test server: noakci-db02, SID: DB02

Windows 2003 64bit

Oracle 10G (10.2.0.3)

1.  Why does Oracle force me to setup the same directory structure on the test server as the production server to perform a RMAN DB restore of the prodcution DB to the test server

2.  I am also forced to change the SID on the test server to match that of production when performing an RMAN restore of prod to the test server.

3.  If I do not place the RMAN  backup from production in the exact same location on test, RMAN cannot locate the backup.  I am using the control file opposed to the catalog.

Howdy, Stranger!
