Database backup suggestion using OS level backup

 Hi,

(11g Enterprise Edition Server on Linux x86-64 and Sun Fire X4150) * 2 on the drawing board with Active Data Guard option

According to my SA, there is no backup tailored to database currently.  I will have to rely on periodic incremental and full OS level backup for a while which only backup closed files.   Can anyone suggest a backup strategy in my case?

I am thinking of RMAN cold backup on the production database to the disk without interrupting the web reporting front end which will connect to the standby read only database (Active Data Guard option).  I haven't read any of the RMAN or Data Guard manuals yet but just by browsing the Internet.  Is this doable?  If so, can it be automated? Also, how long will it take RMAN to perform a cold backup on a database of size about 8 GB?

Howdy, Stranger!
