Install Base Cleansing including Merging of duplicate machines - is this possible?

Hi team,

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.  We are currently starting a very large install base cleansing project, and have a couple of scenarios we need help with:

1.  Duplicate install base instances.  Where machines are tracked, but returned incorrectly (misc. receipt, not RMA) and then re-sold, we have a situation where we have ended up with many duplicate machines.  This makes it very confusing when trading in old machines and also when updating service contracts (which contract is the real one?).  Does anyone have experience of merging duplicate instances, and if so, how did you do it?  Have you got SQL scripts that we could use as a baseline?
