use of substitute Items in BOM and for Discrete Job completion

 Dear Friends
  We wish to define substitute item usage for our bill og materials for a product. we have done the same But we are unable to use the same during Move Transaction for the discrete job for the product.
Can you let me know what setup steps are involved in defining and using Substiute items .
