OPTIMIZER_MODE SETTINGS

Hi, We understand optimizer_mode = RULE is no longer supported as a database parameter setting. However in Oracle 11g will it still be possible to get the same functionality by: alter session set optimizer_mode= RULE I understand this will not be officially supported but please indicate if the functionality still exists.
