one off patch installation

I have a question that I hope can be answered. We are planning a one off patch installation to fix a bug within Oracle. My question is, how will this effect our quarterly cpu patches? Will we have to back out the one off patch to complete the cpu patch or can we move forward with the cpu patch as scheduled without regard to the one off patch? I know that this has been a problem in the past, but I am not sure if this has been rectified. Please let me know.
