jdk question

what is jdk  - it is listed as a part of SQL Developer, and I need to know what it is....is it Java Developer Kit?

Will it have any impact on Jinitiator versioning?  We use Oracle Apps, and if I install a later jdk version, I wanted to know if I had to do anything with jinitiator to make sure it doesn't impact Oracle Apps.
