Price Books - can I stop end-dated items from producing Pricing Errors and/or Publishing?

Release 12.0.4: I have end-dated items on my price list.  I create a Price Book with Product Criteria "Price List" and enter the price list name.  The Price Book produces pricing errors for the end-dated items but still lists them on the Price Book output, just with no prices (blank).  This is using seeded templates in Oracle.  Seems to me that is the item isn't found on the price list for the pricing date because it was end-dated on an earlier date, it should just be ignored.  Has anyone else encountered this issue and found a reasonable resolution or workaround
