Problem with 1Gb limit on Oracle Enterprise Linux

I have installed Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3. When my server has 1 Gb of memory ( be this in a single 1Gb memory stick or two 512 M
b sticks ) the performance of the OS is fine. However whenever I try to add additional memory, the BIOS recognised the memory but the performance of the OS during boot up and subsequently after boot up is extremely poor. I have seen multiple hits on the web suggesting that using over 1 Gb of RAM memory will degrade performance in Linux but I have not seen any solutions.

It is my intention to install E-Business Suite & BI on this server. The user base and number of instance of Oracle database I will have, requires the server to have more than 1Gb of RAM.

Howdy, Stranger!
