Changing Oracle EBS context on VMware image

We are trying to create images to be used for training and development.  We started by using VMWare to image a working server with Oracle DB and Apps servers installed.  We thought that we could create new instances of the server image and rename Oracle to recognize the change.  VMWare handles renaming the OS environment variables, but Oracle is still pointing to the old server and has all the old context information intact.
We are thinking we could use AutoConfig, or the last part of 230672.1 (Cloning Oracle Applications Release 11i with Rapid Clone) which tells you how to configure the target system.  Does anyone have any experience with using VMWare to create new server instances and then reconfigured the new instance to work as a new single node system?
