material status control

 Where can I find documentation on Material Status Control?  On the Inventory tab of the item master you can select whether an item is Lot Status Controlled (different from Lot Control) or not.  If selected, the default status is Active.  I can not find any documentation on the list of values for the lot statuses or how these are used by the inventory, planning or order management systems.
