Thumbnail? What thumbnail?

Out of the box, when everything else is turned on, it seems that the thumbnail can't be viewed.  It seems that the Items.Attachments.Thumbnail applied to field never made it into the system, so we have to setup the read privilege at the class level (Parts.Attachments.Thumbnail / Documents.Attachments.Thumbnail.)
