Will Standby Database Work Between Database Versions

Is it possible to setup a standby database on a 10g or 11g instance that is used by an 8.1.6 database? 
I need to do this temporarily until we can update the 8.1.6 instance to 10g or 11g. Wondering if the log files that will be shipped and applied to the 10g instance will be useable from an 8.1.6 instance.
