How do I see what Oracle software is installed w/o using the GUI?

 I have a requirement to inventory all our Oracle installs on over 50 servers. I can find all Oracle home directories using the /etc/oraInst.loc pointer then looking at the inventory.XML file. Can I use the runInstaller.sh in slient mode to output a list of products that are installed in each Oracle home? I see that the opatch utility will print a list of products installed besides the list of patches, but will that work for all versions from 9 - 11 ?
