Conditions governing switchover / failover decision in 9i

Hi
If we have a 2 node RAC (9.2.0.7) and a stand alone physical standby, what are the conditions under which we will be able to perform a switch over? What are the minimum pre-requisites which we need to meet in order to utilize switchover.
We are asking this because of course in 9i, failover is a one way trip which will require primary RAC database to be rebuild and hence we would want to avoid that course as much as we can and hence would like to make a list for ourselves (kind of check list) so that when we have an issue with primary, we use all the items in the checklist to verify if we would be able to do switchover or if failover is the only option
