ASM - chunk allocation when using external redundancy and RAID-1 (mirroring)

 Hi,

we are configuring 2 node 10g RAC system on Oracle Linux 5
we will be using ASM for storage using external redundancy
we will use RAID level 1 (Mirroring)

we are requesting IT department to give us at least 10 disks
2 @ 500 GB
8 @ 146 GB

we will use 2 physical disks @ 500 GB and create a RAID-1 volume to be used for FRA disk group
we will use the remaining 8 disks to configure another RAID-1 volume and used that for DATA disk group

IT is asking us as to why do we need 8 disks for DATA volume. Instead of giving us 8 physical disks @146 GB
they are asking us to use 2 physical disks
