Are Statistics Necessary in 11g

Hello,

I have been having a discussion with a co-worker about statistics.  The question is, does Oracle 11g automatically run statistics on tables created without a setup process ?  In 9i, we had to setup jobs to run stats on schemas. Is it necessary in 11g ?
