Master Item - Make or Buy Option functionality in environment where planning is not used?

 In an Oracle application environment where basic purchasing & sales orders (with ATP) are used without MRP/Planning. Does the Make or Buy option on the item master form have any functionality?

Would like to use that in a slightly different way and was curious if any issue would exist?
