11gR2: Where does the ASM instance at startup determine where its parameterfile is?

 Hi,

I have just installed 11gR2 Grid infrastructure and created an ASM instance. I see that the spfile is located at:

+DATA1/asm/asmparameterfile/registry.253.697738843   (therefore inside the ASM-DATA1 diskgroup)

My questions:

a)  How can ASM start and use the spfile BEFORE the disks have been mounted and the diskgroup been opened?

b)  In former releases there was an init+ASM.ora file in $oracle_home/dbs pointing to the spfile location.

This file does no longer exist.

How does the ASM instance determine where its spfile is? In the documentation I can find hints to a GPnP (Grid Plug 'n Play) profile,

Howdy, Stranger!
