Group Assets

I am looking into group assets now instead of parent and child assets.

I have been looking at the manual and it seems straight forward enough.  But in our Coprorate Book we have never had Group Depreciation enabled - is this acceptable enough to just turn this on now?

I have tried this in a test environment and i can check the box but when I go to create a new group the Asset Type field is defaulted to Capitalized and cannot be changed.  Does anybody know if there is an option i have to disable to allow Group as an asset type or why this cant be updated?
