How to stop Excel dropping leading zeros when opening from XML Publisher

Does anyone know how I can stop Excel from dropping leading zero's? I have created an rtf template for a trend report and it all works fine. I have set the default output option to be Excel but when I open the report all leading zeros are lost. Is there a way to prevent this?
