Report Changes to item instances for a time period

We have a new requirement from our customer to report (quarterly) changes to instances owned by them for a given quarter. 

Instances for this customer are set up in configurations in a Component of relationship.  (Picture a rack of equipment as "parent" and the servers, etc. on that rack as the "components.")

Changes include:  replacements (old and new instances), parts expired, parts created.
