manually creating sql profiles

 I have some  poor performing queries (vendor code) that I would like to supply hints to without having the ability to change the code.

The queries do contain literals, and I cannot turn cursor sharing on.  This eliminates stored outlines.

I think I can use sql profiles, but have no experience creating them.  I have some questions and was wondering if someone out there could help.
