Thin client connection issue with Data Guard configuration

I've had an SR in on this issue since August and have not yet gotten an answer, so I will try here with all of the DG experts!
My configuration is as follows: Oracle 11gR1 Data Guard with 1 primary and 1 physical standby at same location and 2 additional physical standbys at a remote location. All communicating on a private network. The client connects from the production IP via a F5 (one at each physical location) which load balances the request between the 2 servers. If the server is standby, then the request is automatically routed via the private network to the primary.
