How do people access & use Communities?

I am trying to understand the benefit of these communities pages.  I understand the benefit of communities (I am well known in the OTN forums and other  media) but trying to determine why I should 'move' my time allocation to this set of forums.

As far as I can tell, accessing the useful areas of 'communities' takes several steps:

- log on to My Oracle Support to land on the dashboard

- click on the communities tab (which I expected takes one to communities) to get to the communities welcome page #1

- click on the go to communities button in the communities tab page to get a new browser or tab
