Oracle 9i : how to reduce the undo datafile size ?

Hi,
On my database I've got an undo tablespace with a datafile of 6Gb (autoextensible), When I look at dba_free_space, I see that there's 5,9 Gb free in that file.
For that database, the parameter undo_retention is set to 3 hours.

What could explain that situation ?
Il would like to reduce the size of that file and modify the undo_retention value, how can I find the optimal size and undo_retention value ?
